The ancient Athenians were the first to develop a democratic system of government. We look at how they met the needs of the people and made decisions democratically.
Many people do not know it, but completely independent of the ancient Greeks, several First Nations groups banded together in the 12th century to create their own democratic society that has served as a template for our current Canadian government. The Confederacy of the Six Nations still continues to this day.
How is our own government structured? What lesson have we learned from ancient societies that gave power to the people? How does our government go about meeting our needs and making decisions that affect us? We learn the structure and function of our provincial and local governments and learn that we an integral part of our own government.
